ABOUT GLEN FLAGLER DISTILLERY
The short-lived Glen Flagler distillery was founded in 1965 by Inver House Distillers in the Moffat distilling complex at Airdrie, also home to the vast Garnheath grain distillery. A Lowland malt distillery, the Glen Flagler distillery’s spirit output was intended to complement Garnheath’s grain whisky in Inver House Distillers blends.
Alongside the Glen Flagler distillery the Moffat distilling complex also produced single malt under the name Killyloch, and a heavily peated variant Islebrae. The Glen Flagler distillery’s malt was used as a component in the blends, Inver House, Mac Arthur’s and Pinwinnie, as well as official 5-Year-Old, 8-Year-Old and non-age statement single malt bottlings during the 1970s and early 1980s. Additionally, the Glen Flagler distillery was also temporarily released as a ‘Pure Malt’, a blended malt released under the Glen Flagler distillery name and label.
Inver House Distillers was affected by turmoil in its parent company Publicker Industries, causing the production of Killyloch and Islebrae to cease in the 1970s. The Glen Flagler distillery was closed in 1985, and the grain distillery Garnheath shut down the following year. In 1988, the distillation site was demolished although the Moffat complexes’ warehouses, blending and bottling facilities remain in existence as Inver House Distilleries head office. Despite the distilleries’ Lowland location the Glen Flagler distillery was considered to posses a surprisingly Speyside character which is lightly peated, soft and fruity.
The Glen Flagler distillery Rare All-Malt whisky was a non-age statement single malt bottling released during the 1970’s. As is often with older examples of standard bottlings drinkers there may be some batch variation in terms of flavours and style. In this dram of Glen Flagler whisky the drinker will discover very light peat, with soft notes of toffee, caramel and pastry combined with fruity undertones of slight bitter plum and dates, a taste of this now lost Scottish distillery.
