Realising the true value of something
How much is a scratch card worth? You can buy a scratch card for £1. But if you were to sell that scratch card on to someone else, would you sell it for what you paid? or would you take into consideration that the scratch card could be worth £10,000?
The scratch card then becomes worth what someone is willing to pay for it. But it is only in the opening, or scratching, of the scratch card that the true ‘value’ of the card is realised – either nothing or £10,000.
What has that got to do with whisky?
At Cheaper By The Dram we think that only in opening a bottle and enjoying the whisky inside is the true value of the whisky realised.
Sure, while the seal is unbroken a 1980s bottle of 15-year-old whisky from the Laphroaig distillery has the potential to be worth £1,500, but unless you open it and try it, can you really be sure that it is worth that price?
After all, whisky is a drink first and foremost, and if you do not drink it, how can you know what it is worth? If you simply buy it for its potential, you are not really collecting whisky so much as collecting trademarked bottles with unbroken seals.
We’ll do the scary part
Don’t worry, we’re here to do the opening. We appreciate that a lot of whisky drinkers cannot justify opening a bottle worth £300, never mind one worth £3,000. That’s where we come in. At Cheaper By The Dram we have done the hard work for you; the bottles are open, all you need to do is to choose which ones you’d like to explore.
A scratch card on us
We think a scratch card perfectly sums up the backward-ness of the whisky collecting world and we wanted to share that with you.
We have included a £1 scratch card in each of the first 100 of our drams. They cost us £100 but the law of averages says that they are worth a lot more than that – it’s up to you to find out how much more.
