WHY CHEAPER BY THE DRAM

First off, welcome to Cheaper By The Dram. We are thrilled to be here, and even more excited to have you here with us, finally. Cheaper By The Dram has been two years in the making as we have strived to bring are dream into reality and bring you exceptional, rare and interesting whisky at an accessible price.

WHERE WE HAVE COME FROM?

We are whisky drinkers whose hobby got slightly out of hand. One day in 2017 we were perusing the latest whisky auction for something interesting, looking at the frankly crazy increase in price of some bottles and thinking about when those bottles were considered ‘normal’ drinking bottles. Sure, it’d be great to try a dram or two of some of these bottles, but £2,000 for a try seemed a bit excessive. So we started to think about ways to make these bottles accessible again.

For the next 18 months we were planning, researching, and most importantly, sourcing the kinds of bottles that we would like to try, and therefore hope other people would too. It’s been an interesting journey as we ensured that our dream was not treading on anyone else’s toes by infringing copyright or using trademarks without permission. In the end we had designed a completely new product,.

SO WHAT’S WITH OUR LABELS AND CBTD REF #?

Did you know that the name of a distillery is usually a trademark? As we did not get permission to use trademarks from all the distillers and bottlers who released the original bottles we are using, we decided to leave the distillery name off the bottles.

Instead we have labelled each bottle with a CBTD Ref # that refers to the origin of a specific bottle of whisky. A bit like the Scotch Malt Whisky Society codes, but our codes are specific to a bottle rather than a full bottling. Each of our bottles are accompanied by an information card which has all the geographically correct point of origin, as well as other non-infringing details from the original bottle. We also link out to Whisky Base on the individual product page so you can see the specific bottle.

Our labels comply with the guidelines provided by the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, who we have worked with closely to ensure that our product shows everything it needs to.

HOW DO I GET MY HANDS ON ONE OF YOUR DRAMS?

We release our drams every two weeks, two bottles at a time. That means there are usually just 46 drams a fortnight, although we have a few 75CL and 1L bottles in there which means we’ll have a few more. You can head to our store to see what’s available now, and get an idea of what you will be able to buy over the next couple of months.
